Great interview! The everlasting imprint that Daughters of the Dust has left on the history of cinema is truly remarkable. Congratulations, Julie Dash!
How serendipitous as I wrote an essay on this film early in July. “Daughters of the Dust endures not because it seeks to comfort or conform, but because it dares to pray through the fractures of history and memory. It holds us in a sacred, silken space where time folds, where remembrance and becoming merge into a fierce, living continuum.”
Thank you bringing this to the consciousness of all!
Love this! 5 years ago I put together a pitch deck talking about women directors and you both were in it. I wanted to show what creativity from us looks like and how our projects fair because of our gift of directing. Thank you both.
Ah, that was a delicious interview! The end had me in tears. It's so affirming to be validated by your elders and even moreso when you have genuine and mutual rapport with them.
Wow! What a delicious taste of the longer interview to come. And what a joy to hear from and about icons who’ve inspired me so deeply. Alice Walker used her famous purple ink to sign my copy of In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens back in my college days. When I asked her for advice on becoming a writer, she wrote one word and underlined it 3 times: BE!!! Took me decades to figure that out😂 Daughters of the Dust simply blew me away. I read everything I could about Julie Dash, and it was in my mind’s eye when I wrote my coming-of-age novel When the Mapou Sings. Ava inspired the first chapter in my children’s book, Women in Film. These phenomenal women & others show us the power of courageous creativity. Thank you for BEing!
I worked with Miss Julie on my very first on camera job in 1996. A remarkable human and fantastic artist. Seeing you both together made my heart happy. Cannot wait to watch the entire DGA interview. Thank you Ava for Onward... it's truly fab!
I love love this interview! Julie Dash is a legend “Daughters of the Dust” is one of the jewels in her body of work. Thanks for revealing her wealth of talent. A great film “worker”
